Legal boundaries of our systemic couples counseling

No medical care, no welfare services –
but professional systemic consulting

On this page, we explain transparently what our systemic couples counseling is legally – and what it explicitly is not. This provides clarity for you as a client and simultaneously protects the integrity of our work.

What our systemic couples counseling is

Our work is a private, consulting service for mentally healthy adults. We offer systemic, solution-oriented couples and relationship counseling for clients who wish to reflect on and further develop their communication, behavior, or relationship.

All services are used exclusively privately and at the individual's own risk. There is no billing through health insurance companies or public institutions.

What our systemic couples counseling is not

Our work is clearly not part of the health service or welfare sector. Specifically, this means:

  • We do not make diagnoses or treat diseases.
  • We make no promises of healing or improvement.
  • We deliberately do not have a legal license to practice medicine. In cases involving illness, we consistently refer patients to licensed psychotherapists or medical doctors.
  • We do not provide scheduled assistance to people in need or particularly vulnerable groups in the sense of welfare services.

Legally, our work is classified as advisory, non-medical couples and relationship counseling. It differs significantly from medical, psychotherapeutic, or welfare work.

Note on the term "systemic couple therapy"

We use the term "systemic couples therapy" solely as a professional designation. It is a synonym for in-depth, systemically oriented couples and relationship counseling. It does not mean that we offer medical or psychotherapeutic treatment in the sense of conventional medicine.

In Germany, couples therapy is generally not covered by statutory health insurance. It is usually commissioned and paid for privately. Our services are therefore clearly classified as non-medical, private-sector counseling services.

Why this distinction is important

Clearly defining our services protects both sides. As a client, you know what to expect – and what not to expect. And we can work within a transparent framework that benefits our clients. DGSF-certified training and complies with our ethical guidelines.

If you suspect you are experiencing mental health problems that may warrant a diagnosis, we recommend that you first seek a medical or psychotherapeutic evaluation. We are happy to provide additional support in relationship issues – provided that this is compatible with concurrent treatment.
